Likely derived from Javanese samar meaning "vague, dim, obscure, mysterious". In Javanese mythology this is the name of a divine jester depicted as having a short stature and a large rear figure. He is prominently featured in traditional shadow puppet plays (wayang) and is considered the guardian spirit of the island of Java.
