Meaning & History

Latinized form of Greek Φοίνισσα (Phoinissa), the feminine form of Phoinix, as well as a proper noun meaning "Phoenicia" and a noun meaning "Phoenician woman". In Greek mythology Phoenissa was the daughter of Alphionis and thus can be considered a naiad. She bore to Zeus a beautiful son, Endymion.
