From Sanskrit महा (mahā) meaning "great" and काल (kala) meaning "time, age, death". This is the name of a deity in Hindu and Buddhist tradition. He is considered a manifestation of the god Shiva in the former, while he appears as a manifestation of the Buddha in the latter. In various Vajrayana lineages he is also seen as a protector deity.
