Meaning & History

Means "grindstone" in Spanish. It is taken from the title of the Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora de la Muela, meaning "Our Lady of the Grindstone". She is the patron saint of various Spanish towns, especially of Corral de Almaguer in the province of Toledo, where a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin is located. According to folk legend, a wooden carving of the Virgin Mary appeared on top of a grindstone and was found by a shepherd, who took it and brought it to his home, but the carving kept appearing on the grindstone. Another version of this legend tells that the Virgin appeared to the shepherd on top of the millstone.
