Meaning & History

Means "queen, mistress, goddess" in Sanskrit, the feminine form of ईश्वर (īśvará) which is both an adjective meaning "able to do, capable of" and a noun meaning "lord, king, God". In Hinduism this is an epithet referring to the Goddess, the divine female counterpart of Ishvara. It is also a term that refers to the shakti, or the feminine energy of the Trimurti, which refer to Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati (i.e. the Tridevi).
