Meaning & History

Means "male serpent" in Basque, from Basque suge ("snake") and -ar ("male"). By folk etymology, it is often associated with Basque su ("fire") and gar ("flame").

This is the name of a Basque deity of storms and thunder said to cross the sky in the form of a sickle of fire and residing in an underground cave. It if often identified with the Basque god Maiu, who comes from heaven to fertilise Mother Earth (Mari). According to the legend, the mythical founder of the lordship of Bizkaia, Jaun Zuria, was the son of Sugar and a Scottish princess.
