Meaning & History

Etymology uncertain, possibly related to the name of the Titan Okeanos. This was the name of a primeval ruler in Ancient Greek mythology, usually of Boeotia, though another tradition makes him the first king of Attica. The English word Ogygian, meaning "ancient, primeval", derives from his name.
