The name of Sobe first appears in writings of about the 7th century by Hippolytus of Thebes.Sobe, also known as Sovin, is a biblical character said to be one of the daughters of Matthan the priest, sister of Saint Anne (Jesus' grandmother), and grandmother to John the Baptist. This is according to medieval Byzantine sources.According to St. Hippolytus of Rome, Sobe was the daughter of High Priest Phanuel and his wife Mary, and the eldest sister of St. Anne.
