Meaning & History

Means "golden flower" in Taíno, from ana "flower" and caona "gold". This was the name of the cacica (a female cacique, or queen) who ruled the native Taíno (Arawak) people of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola when the conquistadors settled there in 1492. She was killed by the Spaniards in about 1503.
