From the Etruscan praenomen Arnthur, of uncertain etymology. It may have been borrowed from the Messapic name Artas/Artorres. This name eventually became the Roman gens Artoria, of which multiple members have been found in inscriptions. It has been speculated that Artorius was the origin of the Welsh name Arthur.
