Meaning & History
From the Greek Λεββαῖος (Lebbaios), which is of unknown meaning. This is another name for Saint Jude, also known as Thaddeus. He wrote the short epistle found near the end of the New Testament. It is believed he preached in Persia, where he suffered martyrdom along with Saint Simon. He is represented in art by a staff and carpenter’s square, indicating that he followed the same trade as Jesus.
