Meaning & History

From the Old English elements wiht meaning "living being, creature, person" and gar "spear". This was the name of an 11th-century East Anglian thegn (whose paternal grandfather was also named Wihtgar). It was used by Bernard Cornwell for one of the primary antagonists in his series of historical novels The Saxon Stories (2004-2020) as well as the television adaptation The Last Kingdom (2015-2022).
