Meaning & History
From a New Testament place name, Βηθαβαρά (Bēthabará) in Greek, which is derived from Hebrew בית עברה (bēt ‛ăbārāh) meaning "house of the ford" or "place of crossing". In some versions of the New Testament, Bethabara is the city where John the Baptist met Jesus and proclaimed, 'Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world' (John 1:28-29), and where he baptized Jesus.
