Meaning & History
Apparently from the English word freedom combined with a Latinate suffix (perhaps modeled on Caledonia), given infrequently as an American name in the 19th century in reference to the United States of America. It is the name of several U.S. towns and cities, the oldest of which appears to be Fredonia, New York (1820), as well as a short-lived republic (established in eastern Texas in 1826 by a group of white settlers and Cherokee Indians).
