Meaning & History
Means "lord of the poplar", deriving from the Akkadian elements bēlu ("boss, chief, master, lord") and ṣarbat (deriving from a place name, that presumably later became associated with groves of trees. There were two cities named Ṣarbat, one in the north near Babylon, and one in the south near the Sinjar mountains). Name borne by the patron god of the city of Baz, who was thought of as part of the entourage of the underworld god Nergal. The city of Baz was known as Šapazzu in Neo-Assyrian records.
