Meaning & History

From the feminine honorific nyai combined with Javanese rara meaning "girl, maiden" and kidul meaning "south". This is the name of the goddess of the sea in Javanese and Sundanese mythology, more specifically the guardian of the Indian Ocean. The second element of her name, rara, was later changed to lara meaning "sick, suffering".
