Meaning uncertain, possibly derived from gallû, an ancient Mesopotamian demon believed to bring sickness and death; this word is also preserved in English ghoul and in Algol (from Arabic al-ghul "the demon"). In Greek mythology, Gello was an evil spirit who caused infertility, miscarriage and infant mortality.
