Meaning & History
Means "mountain, hill" in Auvergnat French. It is taken from the Spanish title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora del Puy meaning "Our Lady of the Mountain". She is the patron saint of the town of Estella, located in the Spanish autonomous community of Navarre. According to folk legend, in 1085, some shepherds went to a mountain as they were attracted by some stars highlighting a cave, where an image of the Virgin was found.
