Meaning & History
From Japanese 瓢 (hyō) meaning "gourd" or 豹 (hyō) meaning "leopard, panther" combined with 太 (ta) meaning "thick, big", 多 (ta) meaning "many", or 田 (ta) meaning "rice paddy". Other kanji combinations are possible. This name is also derived from 瓢箪 (hyōtan), the calabash gourd. Oreburgh City Gym Leader Roark (who is also known as Hyōta) in the Japanese version of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum is a fictional bearer of this name.
