Meaning & History
Latreus was a Thessalioi Kentauroi (Centaur of Thessaly) who participated in the Centauromachy that stirred after the centaurs tried to abduct Queen HIPPODAMIA and thus angered King PIRITHOUS and the king's men (the Lapiths). Latreus likely died in this battle, though his exact actions somewhat vary. Latreus was wounded by the invulnerable Lapith CAENEUS. In some versions Latreus is killed by him and in others he lived long enough to attempt (or succeed) to kill CAENEUS by burying him alive. Latreus took particular contempt with the fact that CAENEUS has been born a woman and chose to live as a man.
