Meaning & History
This name was most notably borne by a king of Sparta, after whom the Eurypontid dynasty was named. It is not quite clear whether he is a historical person, or whether he is fully mythological. If the former applies, then he is thought to have lived in the 9th century BC.His name should be a compound name, of which the first element is derived from the Greek adjective εὐρύς (eurys) meaning "wide, broad". The second element of the name is uncertain. It might possibly be derived from the Greek verb πονέω (poneo) meaning "to toil, to labor, to work hard". An other possibility might be πώνω (pono), which is the Aeolic and Doric Greek form of the verb πίνω (pino) meaning "to drink" as well as "to carouse".Lastly, this name is not to be confused with the very similar name EURYPHON.
