Derived from the Latin adjective palmatus meaning "bearing palms, decorated with palm branches", itself ultimately derived from the Latin noun palma meaning "palm tree" as well as "flat hand, palm of the hand".Also compare the Latin noun palmatias meaning "a slight earthquake", which ultimately comes from the Greek noun παλματίας (palmatias) meaning "an earthquake with violent shocks". In turn, it is ultimately derived from the Greek noun παλμός (palmos) meaning "quivering motion, pulsation, vibration".This name was notably borne by saint Palmatius of Trier (3rd century).
