Meaning & History
The first element of this name is derived from the Greek noun ἥγησις (hegesis) meaning "command". It is ultimately derived from the Greek verb ἡγέομαι (hegeomai) meaning "to go before, to lead (the way)" as well as "to guide". The latter is closely related to the Greek verb ἄγω (ago) meaning "to lead, to guide" as well as "to bring, to carry". Also compare HEGEMON. A known bearer of this name was Hegesias of Cyrene, a Greek philosopher who lived around 300 BC.
