Meaning & History

Meaning uncertain. According to one Russian source, the name is a combination of the Persian noun شیر (sher) meaning "lion" (see Sher) with the Arabic noun مدينة (madina) meaning "town, city". The latter element could perhaps be in reference to Medina, the city in which the Prophet Muhammad is buried. Its name literally means "city" in Arabic, so the etymology remains the same.

Georgian sources state that the name means "the conscience of faith", where the second element is clearly derived from the Arabic noun دين (dīn) meaning "religion, faith".

In Georgian literature, Shermadin is the name of a character from the 12th-century epic poem The Knight in the Panther's Skin written by the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli. He is the faithful servant of Avtandil.
