Meaning & History
Means "journey" in Swahili, from Arabic سَفَر (safar). It is commonly used by Eastern Bantus in Kenya, given to babies born when traveling or given in reference to a lot of traveling by a relative. However, this word is also used to market tourist sites and destinations in East Africa (Kenya), namely expeditions to observe or hunt animals in their natural habitat. Its use in the United States has been influenced by a brand of perfume called Safari, which was introduced by Ralph Lauren in 1990.
