Meaning & History

Arabic name derived from رائف (rayif) "compassionate, kind". It usually given in reference to the Koranic surah and verse al-Hajj 22:65, "God is most compassionate and most merciful to mankind."

One notable bearer is Raif Badawi (born 1984), a Saudi Arabian writer and human rights activist who has been nominated for the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize.
