Meaning & History
From the Chinese character 望 (wàng) meaning "to gaze" combined with 舒 (shū) meaning "comfortable, easy". In ancient Chinese mythology, Wangshu was the charioteer of the moon deity who was sometimes seen as a metaphor for the moon itself. They were first mentioned in the Chuci (楚辞) or Elegies of Chu, with later poems making the sun goddess Xihe their counterpart. The name has been borne by the poet Dai Wangshu (1905-1950) and has recently been given to the first exoplanet discovered by Chinese astronomers.
