Basically means "one who holds a heart", derived from the Persian noun دل (dil) meaning "heart" (see AVTANDIL) combined with the Persian suffix دار (dar) meaning "possessor" (see ELDAR). Also compare the modern Persian noun دلدار (deldar) meaning "beloved", which consists of the same elements.
