Meaning & History
Means "god, deity" in Tagalog, derived from Sanskrit भट्टार (bhaṭṭāra) meaning "holy, honourable, venerable" (through a transmission from Malay betara). In native Tagalog mythology, Bathala is the deity who created the universe. After the arrival of the Spanish, he came to be associated with the Christian God.
