Meaning & History
Derived from Greek ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse" and ἀρετή (arete) meaning "goodness, virtue". This was the name of the wife of Alcibiades. In Greek mythology it was borne by one of the Danaids (i.e. the 50 daughters of Danaus).
