Meaning & History
From Egyptian zꜣ.nht meaning "son of the sycamore", derived from zꜣ "son" and nht "sycamore tree", a plant associated with the goddess Hathor. The last element has also been connected to the words nht "shelter, protection", nht "(magical) protection", nh "to escape (death)", and nhw "the protection of the king’s arm". This is the name of the titular character in ‘The Story of Sinuhe’, a work of ancient Egyptian literature dating back to at least 1800 BCE.
