Possibly derived from Greek περί (peri) meaning "around, exceedingly" and μῆλον (melon) meaning "fruit". This was the name of a nymph in Greek mythology, a daughter of Hippodamas and lover of Achelous, who was changed into the island of Perimele, one of the Echinades islands off western Greece.
