Latinized form of the Greek name Κλεόλαος (Kleolaos), which was derived from the Greek elements κλέος (kleos) meaning "glory" and λαός (laos) meaning "people". In Greek mythology this was the name of a son of Herakles (by Argele, daughter of Thespius).
