Meaning & History
From the name of a river in western Hokkaido (空知), derived from Ainu ソラㇷ゚チペッ (Sorapchipet), combined from ソ (so) meaning "waterfall" and ラㇷ゚ (rap) meaning "to descend" with the plural suffix チ (chi) and ペッ (pet) meaning "river."
The second kanji can be substituted with a chi kanji, like 智 with the same meaning ("wisdom") as 知 or 治 meaning "cure; management." The first kanji can be substituted with a kanji that has the same or similar meaning to 空 ("sky, heaven"), like 天, or it can be split into two kanji with a so(u) kanji, e.g. 宗 meaning "principle, aim, pillar" or 颯 meaning "quick, sudden," and a ra kanji, e.g. 良 meaning "good, excellent."This name is rarely used.
