Meaning & History
Possibly derived from Greek περκνός (perknos) "dark-spotted", a word used to refer to eagles. In Greek mythology Prokne or Procne was the wife of the Thracian king Tereus. Tereus raped Procne's sister Philomela and cut out her tongue, so Procne fed Tereus the flesh of their son Itys. At their deaths, Procne was changed into a swallow, Philomela into a nightingale, and Tereus into a hoopoe.
