From Indonesian dewi meaning "goddess", ultimately from Sanskrit देवी (devi), and sri, a title of respect derived from Sanskrit श्री (shri). In Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese mythology she is the goddess of rice, fertility and prosperity who is also associated with the moon and underworld. She is considered an equivalent of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi.
