Meaning & History

Old English cognate of Sahsnot, possibly consisting of Old English seax "knife, dagger" (related to seaxa "Saxon") and (ge-)nēat "companion, associate" or nēat# "help, need".

Seaxnēat was the name of an Anglo-Saxon god from which the kings of Essex claimed descent.
