Possibly means "clan leader" from Arabic أمير (ʾamīr) meaning "prince, commander" combined with Persian ویس (vis) meaning "clan". This was the name of an 18th-century Pashtun ruler who founded the short-lived Hotak dynasty in what is now Afghanistan and Iran.
