Meaning & History
From Greek πολυμάθεια (polymatheia), πολυμαθία (polymathia) meaning "much learning, erudition", from πολύς (polys) "much" and μαθ- (math-), the root of the verb μανθάνω (manthano) "to learn". In Greek mythology Polymatheia was one of the three Muses recognized at Sicyon, as remarked by Plutarch. He compares her to Polymnia to whom he ascribes precedence over accumulation and preservation of knowledge.
