Meaning & History
Means "turtle-dove" in Hebrew. The turtledove is a type of pigeon bird of small medium size. There are 16 species for this bird. The upper part is light brown and the lower part is in shades of pink-red. Some have a black and white neck decoration. The name comes from the Bible: "Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, the swift, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people do not know the rules of the Lord" (Jeremiah 8:7).
