Meaning & History

Means "orchards" in Spanish, taken from the title of the Virgin Mary Nuestra Señora de las Huertas meaning "Our Lady of the Orchards". She is the patron saint of the city of Lorca, located in the Region of Murcia, Spain. According to folk legend, king Alfonso X (as a prince) camped his Christian troops to conquer Lorca and there he decided to build a hermitage to shelter an image of the Virgin, which later became the guardian and patron saint of the city.
