The first element of this name is either derived from Baltic vyd meaning "to see" or from Baltic vyti meaning "to chase, to drive away" (see VYTAUTAS). The second element is derived from the Lithuanian noun liaudis meaning "people, folk", which is etymologically related to the Germanic element leud meaning "people" (see LEOPOLD and LEUTWIN).
