Meaning & History

From Japanese 節 (setsu) meaning "section, period, verse, melody", though it is often written せつ using the hiragana writing system. It can also come from せ (se) meaning "world" combined with 津 (tsu), a place name, such as Tsu city in Mie prefecture. Other kanji combinations are possible.

A famous male bearer is Setsu Kobayashi, a professor of Keio university.
