Meaning & History

Thai name for the kalavinka, an immortal mythical bird in Buddhist belief that is said to possess an enchanting cry. The term itself is derived from Sanskrit कलविङ्क (kalavinka) meaning "sparrow" or "Indian cuckoo". This is also the Thai name for the bird-of-paradise, both a species of bird and a type of flower.
