Meaning & History
Derived from the place name Burgundy and Old German fara meaning "journey". This was the name of a Burgundian saint and abbess of the 7th century in what is now France. Saint Burgundofara, also known as Fara, was a sister of Saint Faro (full name Burgundofaro). Her name has been spelled Burgondophora and interpreted as meaning "bringer of the Burgundians" as if the second element is from Greek φόρος (phoros) "bearer" (itself from the verb φέρω (phero) "to carry").
