Meaning & History
Variant of LOU. This spelling was used by Charles Dickens for a character in his novel 'Hard Times' (1854), in which case it is a short form of LOUISA. In Britain, Australia and New Zealand this has been a slang word meaning "lavatory" since the 20th century, perhaps from a short form of the name of the unpopular Louisa, Countess of Lichfield (1834-1913).
