Meaning & History

Possibly a variant transcription of Arabic خالي (jali) meaning "free" (general not only related with freedom).

This name was used by Victor Hugo for Esmeralda's little goat in The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831). It was also used by Gustave Flaubert for a dog in Madame Bovary (1857).
