Derived from (Valencian) Catalan lledó meaning "(Mediterranean) hackberry fruit", which is ultimately derived from Vulgar Latin loto or lotus, a word that was used to refer to at least two kinds of plants and one kind of tree.The usage of Lledó as a feminine name originally started in honour of the Virgen del Lledó ("Virgin of the Hackberry") or known in Catalan as Mare de Déu del Lledó ("Mother of God of the Hackberry"), a Marian apparition that was first sighted in 1366 AD and was eventually made patron of the Valencian city Castellón de la Plana by Pope Pius XI in 1922.
