French form of Ezelias, which is a variant spelling of ESELIAS, the hellenized form of the Biblical Hebrew given name ATSALYAHU. This name first occurred in the Septuagint translation made by the Frenchman Pierre Giguet (1794-1883).

Although Ezélie was originally a masculine name, it has mostly been used as a feminine name in French, which is probably due to the name's similarity to other French feminine names, such as ÉMILIE and EUGÉNIE. In that regard, the name has undergone the same fate as its English counterpart AZALIAH.
