Meaning & History
Variant of Móðgunnr. In Norse mythology this is the name of the warden of the bridge Gjallarbrú ("bridge over Gjöll", the river closest to Helheim; "to travel the Gjallarbrú" was used by Sturla Thórdarson as a euphemism for "to die"), which must be crossed on the way to Helheim. Hermód speaks to Móðguðr when he goes to ask Hel to bring Baldr back to life.
